Guided Fly Fishing
Patrick Weaver is an independent Fly Fishing Guide and Fly Fishing Instructor in Western North Carolina near Asheville. There is an old saying, “Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.” This mirrors Patrick’s philosophy of guiding fly fishing for trout or bass. His goal is to help clients develop their fly fishing knowledge, skills, and understanding of the river ecosystem to become a master angler. Patrick’s emphasis on instruction creates a deeper experience for clients. As a former high school and college instructor, he understands the importance of teaching you what to do, but also why. Whether you choose a wade trip for North Carolina trout or a float trip for trout or smallmouth bass, you will learn more about fly fishing and become a better angler.
Fly Fishing Classes
Fly anglers will face a variety of challenges on streams and rivers. Insects may be on the surface with trout slowly rising to feed. Other times, trout are deep, darting back and forth, eating nymphs. Fly fishing requires one to be observant and adapt to the conditions. To be successful, you should understand how the trout are feeding, know how to rig tackle, and how to present the fly in a way that the trout are feeding.
To present flies effectively, fly anglers require a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. One needs to cast accurately and control the layout of the line. Anglers need to know how to fish the water column using a variety of tactics and rigs. Additionally, learn how to read the water and locate trout, as well as the best approach based on your tactics and the situation. This knowledge, techniques, and tactics will make you a complete angler, one who can catch trout in a variety of conditions using various tactics. What sets these courses apart is Patrick’s experience and training. Patrick has been fly fishing for over 40 years and guiding for 18, but he is also professionally trained as an instructor. He holds two degrees with experience teaching at various institutions, including high school and college. Patrick will provide you with a unique learning experience to help you reach your potential as an angler.
Patrick’s Fly Fishing courses will answer why something is important, what you need to know, develop skill proficiency, and the proper application. Each course will address the techniques and knowledge you need to reach your potential as an angler. The courses answer questions that anglers have been wanting to know. Some examples include…
· When would you use a downstream approach rather than an upstream approach?
· What type of water would you fish a parachute pattern in?
· What are the proper stances in casting, and when do you use each?
· How do tactics influence your approach?
· Why is it important to synergize the angle of the cast with the angle of approach?
· What is the proper grip on a fly rod for efficient casting?
· What are the five seasons, and how does that influence fly selection?
The courses are sequenced to build upon each other. A new angler would start with Fly Fishing Fundamentals to establish a proper casting stroke, line management skills, and proper fishing techniques. Experienced anglers will benefit from Fly Casting, Essential Strategies for Fly Fishing, or Hatches and Flies.
